Janaza, Burial, & Visiting Grave
The name of the corporation shall be American Islamic Cultural Center, hereafter referred to as the Center.
Janaza
- Place the body with face turned in the direction of the Ka’abah.
- Make odd number of rows behind the Imam. If there are enough people (minimum of 6 people), then should make at least 3 rows.
- First Takbeer: In Hanafi school recite the Thana (with modification as below). In other schools, recitation should also include the Isti’adhah (seeking refuge from Shaytaan), Basmala, & Surah Fatiha.
“In the Thana of Janaza, there is the addi2on of an extra phrase beyond “wata’aalaa jaddooka, which is “Wa Jalla thanaaooka” meaning “and your praises are elevated.”

- Second Takbeer (typically without raising the hands) followed by reciting Darood Sharif / Salawat an-Nabi.
- Third Takbeer (typically without raising hands) followed by recitation / du’a’ for the deceased:
For adult male or woman, most common du’a’ is:

Allahummaghfirli hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa ghaa-eebina, wa sagheerina wa kabeerina, wa dhakarina wa unthana; Allahumma man ahyaytahu
minna fa’ahyihi ‘alal islam wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu ‘alal eemaan.
O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom amongst us You keep alive, then let such a life be upon Islam, and whom amongst us You take unto Yourself, then let such a death be upon faith.
At minimum is to say: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ
“Allahummaghfirlahu warhamhu” (replacing “hu” with “ha” for a lady, or with “hum” for many).
O Allah, forgive him (her / them) and have mercy on him (her / them).
- Fourth Takbeer (typically without raising of the hands), no recitation, followed immediately with salaam to both right and left. (For Shafi’i school, there is also du’a’ after this takbeer and salaam is given only to the right).
Burial
- Mustahab to recite the following while placing body in the grave:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
Bismillahi wa ‘ala millati rasool-Allah (s): In the name of Allah and according to the Sunnah of Rasul-Allah (s).
- Those present would place three handfuls of earth into the grave, and at each placement recite (TaHa 55):
مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ
Minha Khalaqnaakum
From this (earth) We created youوَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْWa
Feehaa Nu’eedukum
And to it We return youوَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَى
Wa Minha Nukhrijukum Taaratan Ukhra
And from it shall We take you out again
